Dr. Wei’s Lab primarily focuses on addressing the fundamental needs and challenges associated with scalable fabrication processes for producing flexible fiber devices. The core technique employed is the preform-to-fiber fabrication method, which involves thermally drawing a macroscopic solid-state preform into extended lengths of uniform fibers. This method enables the creation of fiber devices with unprecedented control over their architecture, composition, and functionality, spanning lengths from nanometers to kilometers. The fibers produced through this technique are pivotal in advancing multidisciplinary solutions, including fiber sensors, fiber-based optoelectronic devices, wearable fiber electronics, multi-functional fibers, bio-fiber interfaces, in-fiber energy generation and storage, and smart textiles in both single fibers and multi-dimensional fabrics.
